“The Dark Ages” is a period of history that conjures up images of anarchy and plague. The period between the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the beginning of the European Renaissance has an air of mystery and danger. It was a period when knights went on deadly quests to the Holy Land. It’s in this world that I imagine the Scarlet Order of vampire mercenaries getting their start. The Vampire Draco inhabits a castle deep in Transylvania’s Carpathian Mountains. When he gets curious about what happened to his homeland in the British Isles, he travels there and becomes embroiled in the Rebellion against William the Conqueror.
The vampire Alexandra makes her living as a thief. She loves Draco, but won’t be tied down, so she wanders through the world. With the strength of a vampire and roving under the cover of darkness, she can travel where few women of the period could. One of her favorite destinations is Southern Europe, where small towns are blossoming into cities. In Arles, she meets a mysterious vampire called Roquelaure who works for the trade guilds as an assassin.
Roquelaure lives in a forgotten chamber underneath Saint Honorat Church in Arles. Like Draco, he’s an ancient vampire and has connections to the British Isles. He’s hired to fight against the rebellion. Not surprisingly he must ultimately confront Draco. When he does, Alexandra finds herself torn between the two vampires she loves most.
